...one of the best known interpreters of 2Oth century music.
He was born in Transsylvania, received diplomas from Budapest Academy of Music (composition) and Hochschule für Musik in Cologne (conducting). Between 1968 and 1976 he played regularly with the Stockhausen Ensemble. From 1971 to 1979 he collaborated with the electronic music studio of the Westdeutscher Rundfunk in Cologne.
In 1978, at the invitation of Pierre Boulez, he was named musical director of the Ensemble InterContemporain, which recorded Zappa`s The Perfect Stranger in 1984. His collaboration with FZ continued when recording Edgar Varése`s work with the Ensemble Modern in 1991. This recording hopefully will be released this year entitled The Rage And The Fury.
Mr. Eötvös conducted some of Zappa`s work in 2000 - the program was almost the same as on the CD - Greggary Peccary and Other Persuasions- he also took part in the rehearsals for the CD recording.

On one of his CD's you can hear Psalm 151, (1993) which is a ritual memorial protestation in memory of Frank Zappa, with strophes on bass drum and 'processions' on metal instruments. (See criticism here.)
This year (2004-01-26) he received the Cannes Classical Award "Living Composer".
On 2004-04-03 Eötvös was awarded Pro Europa Composition Prize
